Even though it’s almost December, the last few days have felt as though it’s still summer on Maui. Our nights have been a little warm and because of that some people may be losing sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is an important part of being healthy and feeling happy. The nights are warm too and some are not getting a good night’s sleep.

Here’s a few tips on how you can tweak your HVAC unit and get a good night’s sleep.

Check Your Thermostat  If You Have One and Lower the Temperature

Research has shown that the desired temperature in a bedroom is between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Set your thermostat at the same degree will allow your body to relax and your body’s natural temperature will automatically drop.

Keeping your thermostat between 60 to 67 is fairly easy to accomplish when it’s cooler but when conditions are warmer that may be difficult. Use your fan at a higher setting to ensure you maintain this temperature without overusing your HVAC system. You may also want to consider using a zone-control system to allow setting individual temperatures for the different rooms in your home.

Be Aware of Humid Conditions

Since we live in a tropical environment, the weather conditions in Maui often change. Be aware of the humidity or temperature in your bedroom. When the temperature is too high, the air in your bedroom may feel a little thick and making it harder to breath. Having trouble breathing can make it difficult to fall asleep and irritate your respiratory system.

Now you don’t have to necessarily tweak your HVAC system, you can opt to purchase a humidifier or dehumidifier to reach the ideal level of humidity. The idea level is between 40 to 50 percent.

Increase Airflow

Your HVAC system can help take care of the room temperature but having a ceiling fan would help create a breeze that can be felt by your feet. It keeps the air circulating and adds freshness to the air created. A standing fan would be great but also having a ceiling fan directly above your bed would be even better. People who live in the warmer parts of Maui such as Kihei and Lahaina can benefit from this option.

Adjust the speed of your fan to perfectly suit your needs and find the right comfort level. You can check with your HVAC technician who can install a mini-split heating or cooling unit that will give the sense of an individual thermostat control or fan options.
